Tea, Nostalgia, and Crunchy Delights:

Some moments in life are simple yet profound—like sitting by the window on a rainy evening, the aroma of freshly brewed ginger lemon tea wafting through the air, and a plate of hot, crispy medu vada waiting to be devoured. These aren’t just food and drink—they’re pieces of a story, woven with memories of comfort, warmth, and love.

At Azee’s Kitchen, we believe that food is more than sustenance—it’s a connection to the moments that shaped us. Let me take you back to a time when tea and snacks were a ritual, not just a routine, and share our family’s recipe for ginger lemon tea paired with piping hot medu vadas.

The Magic of Ginger Lemon Tea

Ginger lemon tea isn’t just a beverage; it’s a healer. It’s the kind of tea that your grandmother insisted you sip when the weather turned cold, or your throat felt scratchy. Each sip is warm, invigorating, and soothing—a hug in a cup.

Ingredients:

• 2 cups water

• 1-inch piece of fresh ginger (grated)

• 1 tsp tea leaves (or tea bag, if preferred)

• 1 tbsp lemon juice

• 1 tsp honey (optional)

Method:

1. Bring water to a boil and add grated ginger. Let it simmer for 5 minutes to infuse its flavor.

2. Add tea leaves (or dip the tea bag) and let it brew for another minute.

3. Strain the tea into a cup, stir in the lemon juice, and sweeten with honey if desired.

4. Serve hot, with its refreshing citrusy aroma and spicy ginger warmth.

This tea is the perfect companion for introspective moments, bringing clarity to a chaotic day or simply offering solace after a long one.

The Crunchy Comfort of Medu Vada

The medu vada is more than just a snack—it’s a symbol of festivity, hospitality, and sheer indulgence. The golden, crispy exterior and soft, fluffy inside make it irresistible. Pair it with chutney or sambar, and you’re in for a South Indian delight that’s hard to beat.

Ingredients:

• 1 cup urad dal (soaked for 4–6 hours)

• 2 green chilies (finely chopped)

• 1 tsp black pepper (whole or crushed)

• 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

• A few curry leaves (finely chopped)

• Salt to taste

• Oil for deep frying

Method:

1. Grind the soaked urad dal into a thick, smooth batter (add a few drops of water if needed). The batter should hold its shape but not be too runny.

2. Mix in green chilies, black pepper, cumin seeds, curry leaves, and salt.

3. Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Wet your hands, take a small portion of the batter, and shape it into a donut with a hole in the center.

4. Slide it carefully into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crisp.

5. Serve piping hot with coconut chutney or sambar—and of course, a cup of ginger lemon tea!

Every bite of the medu vada brings back nostalgia: lazy Sunday breakfasts at home, festive family gatherings, and chai breaks at the corner tea shop.

The Story Behind the Meal

Growing up, this combination was a weekend ritual at our home. My mother would grind the dal early in the morning while I lingered by the kitchen, eagerly waiting for the first batch of medu vadas to come out of the oil. My brothers and I were the self-proclaimed tea experts of the house, each of us trying our hand at brewing the perfect ginger lemon tea. We would compete to see whose tea earned the most compliments, and those moments were filled with so much laughter and joy.

There’s a kind of magic in these moments. They remind us of the beauty of togetherness, the joy of sharing a meal, and the unspoken comfort of food made with love. Today, at Azee’s Kitchen, I recreate this magic for my family and for you, my dear readers.

A Cup of Comfort, A Bite of Nostalgia

If you’ve ever craved a meal that feels like a warm embrace, this is it. The zing of ginger, the zest of lemon, the crunch of medu vada—it’s the ultimate comfort combo for any time of day.
